Variousmediaoutlets reported on a (short) performance by Tom Waits last Monday night, when he joined Mavis Staples on stage at a Lagunitas Brewery in California to perform Respect yourself.
Man, I wish the audio mix weren't so unsatisfactory here: Mavis + Tom + 'Respect Yourself' = a sonic dream-come-true for me, but it's a real struggle to hear anything other than the guitar.
This was a real surprise! I think Mavis and the band swing hard on this one, it's a winner. Perhaps not surprisingly for a recording done on a phone, the sound mix doesn't really add up. So, we've got a loud band, lead singer that's quite low in the mix and mister Tom Waits, who's mostly singing off mike. I can hear him clap just fine, though. Nevertheless, this is an engaging support performance from Tom Waits and I really do think his hairdo is different class.
Sporting a Jim Jarmusch hairdo and color now, eh? :)
ReplyDeleteHa, I knew it reminded me of someone - here's hoping Jim, Tom and Stuart Copeland of The Police don't end up in the same police line-up anytime soon!

ReplyDeleteHmm, not his finest moment! Always good to see him though.
