An interesting choice of songs for that category but I wish him the best!!

I would have chosen Hoist That Rag, but either way that's good news.

How about "Dead and Lovely"? Or "Make it Rain"? Both I think are better vocal performances than "Metropolitan Glide."

I also agree that Metropolitan Glide was not a good choice. I also would have chosen Hoist That Rag. But I guess Waits fans are different from general music critics, and the Grammy Academy or whoever does that stuff...

Not related to the Grammy nomination but on BBC6 Music last night it was mentioned Tom had recorded a cover of a christmas song. Theis was mentioned on the Tom Robinson programme sometime between 20:15 and 20:30. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Tom Waits covered Silent Night for the 1989 charity record SOS United.

And no, I don't know where you can get that album. However, the Waits cover is on the first cd of the Tales From The Underground series.

Come to think of it, Metropolitan Glide presents a greater range of vocal styles and a broader horizon of vocal performance than Dead and Lovely or Hoist That Rag--that does not mean, of course, that it is a 'better song'. The growling refrain in Hoist That Rag is blood-curdling; but I think it is unquestionable that Metropolitan Glide has a wider range.

Not that it matters what he gets the Grammy for. :)

Re: Christmas Song

As well as Silent Night, Tom guests on the Blind Boys of Alabama's 'Go Tell it on the Mountain' which is excellent.

First off, congrats to Mr. Waits on the nomination. Don't really care which song, just pleased about the recognition.

Second, "silent night" can be found on a two volume set of Waits' covers, soundtrack contributions and a whole bunch of other rare and wonderful tid bits called "Big Face Money" Vol. I & II.

He also did a duet called "Christmas Sucks!" One of my personal favs.

"The Day After Tomorrow" surely? You could hear a pin drop when he sang it at the Hammersmith show, hardly a dry eye in the house.

"Christmas Sucks" is a parody song, it's not really him ;-)

There are recordings (Swinging Pig Records) of Tom's concert 11-17-04 in Berlin on sale on Ebay.de!
Where else can I buy them? - I'm sure, the bids on Ebay will go way up to prices I cannot pay...
Please Help!

I would strongly advise against going the eBay path for bootleg recordings. If you really can't live without them, you might consider some of the on-line communities (Google, Yahoo, Listserv,...). The real fans over there usually don't charge money.

Easytree.org has had free downloads of 8 or 9 of the 2004 Waits shows. You should never pay for them!

I have one hell of a lot of Tom Waits live shows and rare studio material. I also have hgundreds of Cds of live shows by Bob Dylan. I have never paid for regular fan based product. It has always come for free or for a trade. Please dont pay E Bay prices. One problem with this site is that most people post as anonymous (because it never lets you on through the regular channel.)If you want stuff why dont you ask for it and include your EMail address. If nobody knows who you are how can they contact you and send you stuff? We all started somewhere.
