Tom Waits and Iggy Pop hosting BBC radio show

Tom Waits will be co-hosting a two-hour Iggy Confidential episode with Iggy Pop on BBC's Radio 6 on Sunday December 3rd from 4pm (UK time). 

KCRW to release 1987 Tom Waits recording

Radio station KCRW will be releasing various live recordings - ‘recently unearthed and unheard for nearly 40 years’ and ‘newly-remastered’ - from its  archives. One of those is Tom Waits' interview and performance of August 24, 1987 (which has been circulating as a bootleg). Other names include Nick Cave, Cowboy Junkies, Daniel Lanois and R.E.M.

The Bent By Nature archive will be released to the general public on November 14 on KCRW, members get early access starting Friday November 4.

In tandem, KCRW will launch BENT24, a 24-hour, on-demand streaming service featuring a shuffling playlist of Deirdre O’Donoghue’s SNAP episodes (1981-1991).

When approached by KCRW for permission to release his live performance, Tom Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan wrote, “In a town filled with sounds borne of the marriage of music and commerce, Deirdre [O’Donoghue] was a voice and venue for the undiscovered or marginalized and a refuge for artists who felt estranged from the prevailing currents. She opened so many ears and hearts, including ours, with her earthy and irreverent voice and wide ranging enthusiasm for all music. So great someone thought to do this.”

Tom Waits on WHQR's American routes?

Radio station WHQR mentions Tom Waits in the announcement of the new season of its a weekly two-hour program American routes. 

The program also presents documentary features and artist interviews. Our conversations include Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, B.B. King, Dr. John, Dave Brubeck, Elvis Costello, Ray Charles, Randy Newman, McCoy Tyner, Lucinda Williams, Rufus Thomas, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. 

American routes airs on HQR 91.3fm from 6-8pm on Saturday evenings.

A recently 'unearthed' interview with Tom Waits, conducted in a London studio shortly after the release of the film Big Time, was animated by Patrick Smith for PBS' Blank on Blank series.

Just a quick reminder: Tom Waits is one of the guests on the Late Show with David Letterman tomorrow (Thursday).

Tom Waits: 'Writing new songs, a tour (but not right now)'

In a telephonic interview with Norwegian publication Aftenposten about the Corbijn book, Tom Waits says he's writing songs for a new album. And what's more, he doesn't rule out another tour.

– Så, nå får vi se deg i Norge igjen?
 – En vakker dag. Kanskje ikke i juni, men jeg vil helt sikkert komme meg ut på veien igjen, også til litt mer fjerntliggende steder som Norge. Men akkurat nå har jeg ingen planer om turné, sier han, men avslører at han akkurat nå sitter og skriver låter til et nytt album.

'I will definitely get out on the road again, also to some more remote places like Norway. But right now I have no intention of touring'

1975 Nighthawks interview

A nice clip was posted on Youtube: Tom Waits talking about the release of 'Nighthawks at the diner', reportedly in an interview with DJ Don 'Cerphe' Colwell at the WHFS studios (Bethesda, Maryland USA). Recorded on 06 September 1975. I don't think this had surfaced before (but I could be wrong).

 No actual video footage, but a nice part of the interview with Tom breaking out into his 'Emotional weather report' rap.

'Chicago'

Letterman and Fallon performance confirmed

Record company Anti has confirmed Tom Waits will be performing on the Late Show With Dave Letterman (April 24th) and on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon (April 25th).

From Anti statement:

It remains a mystery as to what gems the iconoclast will chose to perform on those stages…but he will be talking with the hosts as well as playing songs for the very first time live from his latest, Bad As Me (...).

Tom Waits on Australian radio

Tom Waits was the guest presenter of radio show The Daily Planet on Australian Radio National a few days ago. The playlist included William Burroughs, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Bob Dylan, Mary Gauthier, Elvis Presley, Alex Chilton and Los Lobos.

I missed this when it was announced, but you can still listen to the broadcast online.

'Complete review' dvd

Amazon has a new dvd, due out on January 24th: Tom Waits - The complete review.

I have no further details, but alhtough it does not look very official, this double dvd set claims to be an overview of Waits' career 'with the aid of plentiful archive footage, interviews with the man himself and contributions from his nearest colleagues'.

UPDATE: This might very well be a repackaged release of dvd that have been around for a while: Tom Waits - Under Review 1971-1982 and Tom Waits - Under Review 1983-2006.
