'Krup' has been so kind as to put Tom's appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman on line on his weblog.

AWESOME! too bad no wmv though, the IT guys at work suck for not letting me have Quicktime.

Pieter are you going to transcribe this interview?

I love the bit about, "... I invented a war,..."

THIS is why I love this bloody site! I missed the actual broadcast Tues. and was kinda down in the mouth because I figured I would never get to see the interview and we all know how good a Waits interview is. Thank God and drywall for Waits fans on the internet.

I could not view the David Letterman show on tuesday night when first on. I was called in to work. However, I did ask a relative to tape it for me.

Well last night, Friday night I finally got to see it... and I was shocked. The interview itself was rather funny when he spoke of his children, but about the horses well that did not sound very interesting to me, however everyone is differennt.

Now the music, if you can call it that?
That was the most pathetic performance that I ever witnessed.
Is Tom ill? Does he suffer from a mucle, or nerve impairment? Also why is he forcing his voice up into a screeching level and call that singing?
He can do beautiful ballads, where one can hear the words being sung, and his beautiful, gravelly voice, but this new stuff is awful! I hope people think twice before thay rush out to buy this new CD! Someone should be honest enough to let this great artist know that he needs to re-think his artistry.
I actually feel sorry, and ashame of that interview he did.

To think I was ready to fly across Canada to see him perform in Vancouver. Thank goodness Ticketmaster had no tickets.
I've spent many dollars as is, on DVDs and CDs, that is adequate for me.
I'm looking forward to Leonard Cohen's new CD coming out Octber 25-26th. This artist has a similar voice, but you can hear the MUSIC!
Mr. Cohen turned 70 this past Setp., annd will not be touring....I only wish he would. Those would be tickets to die for!!

Oh boy. I'm still laughing. Really.

I don't think you'll find many people who agree with you on this site.
I rather enjoyed his performance, it's one of the things I like most about Tom. As he gets older he changes. Closing Time sounds different from Frank's Wild Years, which sounds different from Small Change, which sounds different from Blood Money, etc.
Leonard Cohen, as much as I like him, sounds the same on every album.

Gee Son of Sinatra you sure do not ask for much in life!

I however expect great things from a great artist!

Voila the difference!

For those who think that "60" is old, than "68" must be dead?

As for me I am 68 and proud of it.

Also yes Tom's wife has influenced his music, but when you work at ruining your voice by screaming so often then your voice changes permanently, still in 2002 his "Blood Money" album did come out with "Coney Island Baby", and the one I like best "All the World is Green"!
Also what about "Blind Love", and I could go on and on.
His music can really touch your heart! But this Letterman appearance was a shock.

I wish him well, I'll always love some of his music but will tell it like it.

As for the people who are willinng to pay the scalpers those foolish highway robbery prices... save your money, just re-watch the Letterman show, and buy the new album.

well what can one say "cribbing" well if monkeys can eventually type Shakespeare -horses will paint masters.
This is pure Tom Waits -observations on the odd ,normal and life in waitsworld make fascinating and entertaining listening . I thought he was fantastic.
New album is great -very punchy and raw - diamonds are hidden in the rough -I love " Sins of the Father"

Hello again son of S,

Yes I agree with you on scalpers... we the fans should refuse to buy those tickets a few times and then hope to stop that lousy system.
I'm all for people making a buck, but they only hurt the small guys, the fans. Ebay should also monitor those money grubbers!

Anyway, I hope you got your ticket for one of his shows?
Curious how many concerts have you been able to see?
Also what kinds of tickets were you able to buy?

For every other fan of Tom...great tomorrow is the big day... "Tom Waits Real Gone" goes on sale.

Best to all.

TV...... BRAVO..... at 9:00 PM they played the 1988 movie "Big Time" it was all TOM WAITS!

Well now I understand that Tom's appearance on the Letterman Show was just "standard stuff", thats what all his shows are like.
So for all the fans that know, knew this no wonder they thought that he was great!

Well at this point I'm glad I did not go thru hell and high water to get a ticket.... he is to far out for my taste, however I do like some of his music, and will keep enjoying it.
But to all who dig him, go for it and enjoy.

I can not believe that people were shocked by thar performance, first off all i thought it was superb, second, i don`t see why this came as a shock, had it been "shake it" or "top of the hill" i would have been more understanding,(even though i liked them too), but "make it rain" i find, is classic waits. quite simply for the reason that he has made similar songs for almost 20 years. I felt it was related to "walking spanish" and many other songs from the Swordfishtrombones era. The kind of songs that puts you into a rythmic trance when you just have to throw your arms around and move your body in an epileptic fit. well, mayby thats just me, but i really loved "make it rain."

Letterman Appearance
If you watched carefully you could see his fingers were somewhat curled up and fatter indicating arthritis. This may explain his lack of guitar playing on new album. Only the live shows will explain. Hopefully he memorizes his new songs and does not rely on cheat sheets as per his last series of shows when he had them on his paino and back of guitar

Lack of guitar playing? He's credited with guitar on half a dozen songs...
