I don't think this is a good idea. I think that fans really like to discover otyer Waits sides, bit by bit, on kazaa or thanks to friends. I guess the fans will know that album by heart already, and that it could be a dissapointment, like if Waits felt like getting an album out without too much working on it. E.G.: Nick Cave did it, and it's a disapoitment.
Maybe it could legalize the Tales from the Underground, but not necessarily get people happy.
Besides, most of time knowadays, an album of rareties already known by heart by the fans. Of course he could think about the other people, but once they will hear and get to know somehow... once they surely will...
I think it's a fantastic idea, even though I'll probably have all the songs already... it will be great to have high-quality / official versions. Some of the ones I have were never released so they were taped off a VHS tape or DVD and it doesn't sound that great.
And just because we internet types already downloaded them all, that doesn't mean much... 90%+ of Tom Waits fans probably have no clue that most of the 'orphan' songs exist. And there are some real gems.
I am hoping the studio version of "Lost at the Bottom of the World" is on there, I know it exists but no one's been able to get a copy :-)
I agree with sarah v. and I wish he's done that sooner. Some of his best songs were recorded on other projects than his. Not everybody can afford to buy thirty cds or so to collect them and MP3 sucks anyways.
I agree with Sarah and anonymous. Downloads are only so good, and I'd love to have a 4-CD set (figure that might be what'd take to capture all of the best orphans).
"E.G.: Nick Cave did it, and it's a disapoitment."
You have to be kidding, The Bad Seeds B-Sides and Rarities comp is one best releases they have put out. In fact Nick himself said it was his favorite Bad Seeds release.
Also, most mp3s found on P2P programs are absolutely crap and often times mislabeled. Most the lossless bootlegs are poor quality as well, so if there is live material on the set, it should be of better quality.
Anywho, I'm very curious to see what is going to be included on this set.
This is AWESOME!! And I agree that B-Sides and Rarities absolutely rock! And I may even concede with mr. Cave that it is (at least one of) the best CDs I have with the Bad Seeds.
And besides, most of the stuff on Tales is in terrible quality. Some of the stuff on my Tales CDs that's ripped off from official releases (such as the Dead Man Walking stuff) is even very poor. So I'm extremely excited about this.
And I don't agree that the fans will all have heard this. I probably have, but take the Nick Cave B-sides box - I'm a NC fan but had almost nothing of that stuff.
So I'm really excited! Best Tom Waits news I've heard since I heard about Real Gone - possibly better!
Lets not forget the Black Rider/Alice/Woyzeck stuff that have yet to get studio recordings, or any recordings at all, in the case of songs like "News from the Duke", "Shiney Things"

Ow yeah!! I'll start collecting money ;-)
Can't waits!! This would be a smart way for Tom to undercut sales of the illicit Underground series.

If waits would only "re-record" the orphans that we already have; like he did with the "re-release" of Alice. That would be sick.
I would also venture a guess that he would polish the set off with a few "unheard" originals as yet to be recorded.
This is a great idea, though I like finding new songs on the internet and so. But still it's gonna be great having all the "orphans" in a box.
Curiously, the Orphans box set, at least according to the pre-list on Keeslau, will not include the following "orphan" songs featuring Tom:
1. Go Tell It On The Mountain (with The Blind Boys of Alabama)
2. King Kong (Daniel Johnston cover)
3. Going Fetal (with Eels)
There are also a few tunes missing that are on the Underground series, such as Blue Skies and White Rabbit's Lament. There are probably others.
