Billy's Band plays in the USA
May 7, 12, and 14
Billy’s Band are: vocalist Billy Novik with his rough vocals of a man who has smoked too many Belomors, bayanist and percussionist Anton Matezious, and guitarist Andrey Ryzhik.
Trio’s main virtue is their talent to make impressive musical sound with minimum number of participants.
Billy’s Band is a musical and theater project. They started their career with Tom Waits covers. Alongside with their traditional concert programs the band will present fragments from their two theatre shows: "Blues On My Mind" with their original musical materials and "Being Tom Waits" with covers from Tom Waits’ repertoire. Besides playing music during the concerts the band presents elements of theatre of the absurd and dumb show.
The album "Being Tom Waits" is a sound-track to the cognominal theatrical performance and includes cover versions of Tom Wait’s songs and Billy Novik’s (the vocalist) lyric soliloquies. It also comprises several most early records dated back to the band’s "Waits Period" – the time of "extreme despair", as Billy has recently called it. The release of the fifth album summarizes the Billy’s Band creative youth, paying tribute to its Great Teacher Tom Waits.
From it's humble beginnings as an amusing time-filler for friends and acquaintances, the "Billy's Band" has matured into, arguably the brightest revelation of the St.Petersburg and Moscow club scenes in 2003. Giving new life to the style, created by Kerouac and Waits, mixed with purely native life observations, stories and city myths (the musicians themselves describe their style as "Graveyard Dixieland with an Endless Happy End") has given the band a truly idol-like status from the audiences of both capitals, and later even Europe.
