Anoter revised setlist. Who's been talkin' segues into Till The Money Runs Out. The line ,,bye bye baby bye bye'', is part of the lyrics of Till The Money....

Let me do my best to at least help some.

1. Make It Rain
2. Hoist The Rag
3. Shore Leave

a few other full band songs including November, God's Away, and World's Green in an order that I don't remember. Except that God's was before World

Tom and Larry played the following.
Tom Traubert
Tango Till They're Sore
House Where Nobody Lives
Lucky Day

Full Band then played the following in some order
Eyeball Kid
Trampled Rose
Murder In The Red Barn
Shake it
Who's Been Talkin'(Lie To Me Baby, Right?)
Circus

The Following is definitely in the right order
Get Behind The Mule
Goin Out West
Encore:
Day After Tomorrow
Don't Go Into That Barn

Thats the best I can do...

Anonymous said...

I think I named all of them, except some song after November whose name I didn't know...

Anonymous said...

Rains on Me was also played.

That comes to 22 songs, one may be missing, but I doubt it.

Anonymous said...

Hey Bone Machine, do you know what was after November? It was beautiful...

Anonymous said...

The first three songs are in order of when they were played. The last three songs are in order of when they were played. I can't remember the others.

Make It Rain
Hoist That Rag
Shore Leave

God's Away on Business
House Where Nobody Lives
Get Behind the Mule
Shake It
Circus
It Rains On Me
Murder in the Red Barn
Tom Traubert's Blues
Tango til They're Sore
Eyeball Kid
November
Lucky Day

Goin' Out West
(Encore)
Day After Tomorrow
Don't Go Into That Barn

Here are some revisions to the setlist. I don't know about the order but I think the first half up to Who's Been Talkin'>Til the Money Runs Out is accurate. A real significant omission so far has been that Tom played FALLING DOWN and I was floored:

Make It Rain
Hoist The Rag
Shore Leave
God's Away
All the World is Green
November
Tom Traubert
Tango Till They're Sore
House Where Nobody Lives
Lucky Day
Who's Been Talkin>Til the Money Runs Out
FALLING DOWN
Eyeball Kid
Trampled Rose
Murder In The Red Barn
Lie to Me, Baby (a full cover)
Shake it
Circus
Get Behind The Mule
It Rains on Me
Goin Out West

Day After Tomorrow
Don't Go Into That Barn

23 songs in total, if you count the Lie to Me song as one. It was a full cover last night.

Anonymous said...

Falling Down was immediatly after November. I promise!!! Not to mention that It Rains on me was in the last half othe set, and Novemeber was AFTER World's Green.

What a great night. Tom was in high spirits and fine voice, and really seemed to enjoy being in front of a crowd. He encouraged the audience to join in on several singalongs.

I have to agree with some of the posters on the earlier shows that Duke the guitarist was solid, but unexceptional. He seemed to be an unadventurous choice for a crewmember on this little pirate ship, but the rest of the band more than made up in showmanship.

A few highlights:

* Tom’s slipups in remembering verses became kind of a running joke. He took three runs at a verse in Tango Till They’re Sore before moving on, and later on was gladly accepting cues from the audience. He sang the newer stuff without a hitch.

* Gorgeous rendition of November with multi-instrumentalist Bent Clausen on a wee little organ with a big sound.

* Also glad to hear Falling Down – which if it’s not an orphan, it’s kind of a stepcousin.

* Very touching version of Day After Tomorrow at the end.

* In Eyeball Kid, he uncorked a completely new voice I’d never heard – very high pitched and clear as a bell. He sounded like a cartoon character.

* Was that young Sullivan Waits in the background on percussion on one song - Hoist That Rag, maybe? I saw a kid whacking on something with a long stick.

The people next to me were saying that the kid on Hoist That Rag was his son. What was up with the booing when he introduced Duke? I was right up front, maybe it was just a few people. Did anyone lurk around The Brown hoping to meet Tom or the band?

Anonymous said...

I thought people were yelling Duuuuuuuuuuuke. But maybe they were booing. Apparently, from the Courier-Journal's review, Duke lived in Louisville for a while.

Anonymous said...

They weren't booing Duke; they were yelling DUKE. He's got Louisville roots.

Make It Rain
Hoist That Rag
Shore Leave
God's Away On Business
All The World Is Green
November
Falling Down
Tom Traubert's Blues
Tango Til They're Sore
House Where Nobody Lives
Lucky Day

(those are in order *for certain* as i was comparing it to the nashville show i was also at...things get a bit hazy after that though)

I know he did play that Cause Of It All/Til The Money Runs Out/whatever that he played in Nashville along with that other cover of Who's Been Talkin/Lie To Me Baby. Everything else has been reported accurately although I can't vouch for the order after the piano interlude. Hope this helps.
(and eyeball kid was a splendid surprise!)

Anon's setlist from 2:09 PM is more correct (I'm seconding blugel, who just posted). Not sure if it's 100% right though. There was a song about a woman leaving on a train, which my husband (the much bigger fan) thought might be 2:19 (but he's never heard it before, so he isn't sure). Anyone else know what that song was?

Falling Down was definitely in there. We were very excited to hear this borderline Orphan.

It was an awesome, amazing night -- especially for someone like me who's just starting to discover his music. Major credit to the lighting design -- added a terrific edge to the experience! Guess I should have waited to buy my tickets, since I was in the nosebleed back of the balcony, only to hear about very close floor seats being on sale within days of the show!! Oh well, at least we were there for the show of a lifetime .....

Anonymous said...

for those considering bringing in recording equipment, was there much of a pat down at the door or metal detectors?

Anonymous said...

You could get a small DAT & mic in pretty easy I thought. All songs that have been posted he played even the ones in ?. Duke did a good job. Loved rain on me and eyeball kid. It was a bummer that my pregnant wife had to leave mid show because she was getting sick to her stomach. I'm begining to wonder if it's mine any kid that can't sit through two hours of tom waits in the womb or not can't be a kid of mine!

Anonymous said...

To Laura:

The song about "leaving on a train" was the Who's Been Talkin' prelude to Til the Money Runs Out. It's a really cool transition from that into Til the...practically imperceptible if you're not expecting it. I thought Duke was great here.

I'm still totally confounded by the Lie to Me song. I think it's a cover but I'm having a hard time finding who did the original. It was a scorcher last night and really got the audience into it.

amazing...We were in the front row in the Pit, seeing the spit fly from his mouth and the sweat dripping off his forhead...mesmerized the whole show...First show, hope it won't be my last..

LOL!
it could be the kid was just doing somersaults and was causing the little lady to be nauseous b/c he wanted OUT, MAN! :)

another note: FALLING DOWN! one of my favorites... hope he pulls some surprises in Akron. thanks for all the reviews posted here... it's allowed me to live vicariously through TN and now Louisville.

Anonymous said...

LOL, some guitarist should name himself Boo then, so when they introduce him the whole crowd could boo.

The Eyeball Kid said...

Oops oops: you probably mean Tom Traubert's Blues.

Anonymous said...

When he was talking about the chewstick for his dog and seeing it was mad out of 100% Bull Penis....that was pretty funny

Anonymous said...

Does anybody remember hearing Troubles Braids? I may have just added this one to the list in my dreams.

Anonymous said...

Did I here Diamonds and Gold?

Anonymous said...

I could have sworn that the song before Get Behind the Mule was Gun Stree Girl. The show was fabulous! What else can you say? Tom's slip up on the lyrics just added to it. The man is a genius.

Question abt will-call: I was under the impression that Akron OH will be will-call only, but I just received an e-mail from Ticketmaster saying they will mail my tickets to me???? HELP!? Should I just ask Ticket(evil)master(of-demonry)?

Anonymous said...

Lydia,

I don't think anything is wrong. Akron is one of the venues where only the "premium seats" are will call. This means that people with front orchestra seats (the ones the scalpers want to sell) are going through the strict anti-scalping policy while the people like us in the balcony get our tickets in advance. It's a compromise, so the good seats don't get scalped but the lines don't bend around corners.

Last night in Louisville was amazing! Tom Waits has an amazing ability to perform in front of a couple of thousand people and maintain the feel of just being back at the house. It was a momentous occasion to be able to witness these craftsmen doing what they do best with such an easy confidence. Even when the Man in the Hat faltered a little with the lyrics he maintained his grasp of the crowd. On Monday the Palace ate from his hand and loved it. Hats off to the crowd, also! I guess that's the kind of reverence you get from your fanbase when your appearances are so widely scattered. This was my first Tom Waits concert and I was well aware of the fact that it may be my only one. Not by my choice, of course.

A couple of things about the show:

When Tom and Larry were playing the last verse of the song Lucky Day, and Tom sang...

Now when I was a boy
My daddy sat me on his knee
And he told me
He told me many things
And he said son

Did anybody else catch him turn to the crowd and say "He always called me son"?

Secondly, I thought that it was a great idea to shut the bar down when the show started. I really think it helped add to the ability to keep everyone transcended and locked into the magic space in Louisville.

Last.....the lighting was perfect. After the band had assembled onstage without Waits I started to imagine all of the different possibilities of him entering (e.g. being lowered in on a rope or just materializing from below the stage) and then the scarecrow silhouette appeared about twenty feet high on the backdrop and I knew we were in for a treat.

Anonymous said...

I caught that..

Anonymous said...

Thanks Anonymous for responding about the will-call issue in Akron! I was starting to worry, but I feel all better now. See you in the balcony!

"Did anybody else catch him turn to the crowd and say "He always called me son"?"

Yes, I was trying to recall if that line is in the recorded version of the song, but I don't think it is. He is so dang funny. I am wired, tired, blown away. I am kicking myself for not also getting tickets to Akron. Does anyone know if they're going to be selling tickets the day of the show? I saw they were doing that elsewhere (the waiter at Cunningham's last night mentioned he got tickets just yesterday) but I don't know about Akron. What a show. That guy is amazing.

All I can say is that it was incredible. Felt like I had been transported back to a vaudville show in the 1920's and then took a bunch of mushrooms. Must agree with the folks who have complimented the light show. Best light show i've ever seen because it wasn't obtrusive and highlighted the ambiance of the music. Do wish fans would wait till the end of songs to applaud, though. Beautiful venue.Really appreciated how the stage went black after every song. Felt like a Broadway play, in that the scene is over, here is the next scene. A+++++++++
Tom, please keep touring each summer. Greatest show of a lifetime and I will go back to the Louisville palace. I've been to the Ryman but the decor of the Palace is pretty much unrivaled from where i've been.
Good things,
Lonesome Hurt

"Do wish fans would wait till the end of songs to applaud, though."

I'm so glad you mentioned this. In Louisville, we lost many last few notes because of that. Not a big deal, not complaining, I'm still walking on air, but it would have been great if everyone had demonstrated how rapt they were by respecting the artists and avoiding premature applause.

All this debate on the setlist from eye/earwitnesses, one can see that the eyewitness isn't always reliable in court...

I'm new to this list and I did take notes last night but I don't know the names of certain songs, so i've included a bit of lyrics here and would appreciate someone deciphering the lyrics into song titles. Thanks.

for all future reference, "Bye Bye Baby" is Till The Money Runs Out! just go listen to your copy of Heart Attack and Vine, to the song Till the Money Runs Out, and you will here him singing over and over and over again "bye bye baby, baby bye bye", and then you will be confused no more!

Not "Big In Japan". "Get Behind The Mule"

It's like the people are all train spotters. Meticuosly marking down the numbers of the trains going by...setlists...setlists.
For us poor slobs in other parts of the world...was the show any good?how was the sound/lighting/band/venue/in between jokes/etc. Did you just visit or live there?Did you have fun? Did your pen run out of ink in the middle of the set??

Anonymous said...

to answer "show quality" questions, here's my take: tom was in great form; band was good, but '87 band was more interesting, somehow (my only point of reference); sound was good, but not very loud (from row s perspective), and given the deepness of the voice, more volume would be helpful; song selection is always a personal matter, so not much point debating it; all in all, a great time, and i feel a little bad for anyone who can't make a show this time around.

Anonymous said...

The Lie to Me song is 100% separate from the Who's Been Talkin>Til the Money Runs Out segue. It came much later in the set. Also, there was no Big in Japan.

If you want to see the setlist as it is exactly, here it is:

Make It Rain (Real Gone)
Hoist that Rag (Real Gone)
Shore Leave (Swordfishtrombones)
God's Away on Business (Blood Money)
All the World is Green (Blood Money)
November (The Black Rider)
Falling Down (Big Time - live compilation)

*Tom Traubert's Blues (Small Change)
*Tango til they're Sore (Rain Dogs)
*House Where Nobody Lives (Mule Variations)
*Lucky Day (The Black Rider)

Who's Been Talkin (Howlin'Wolf cover) > Til the Money Runs Out (Heartattack and Vine)
Eyeball Kid (Mule Variations)
Murder In The Red Barn (Bone Machine)
Lie to Me, Baby (cover) -----> Double check me on this one, guys.
Shake it (Real Gone)
Circus (Real Gone)
Trampled Rose (Real Gone)
Get Behind The Mule (Mule Variations)
Goin Out West (Bone Machine)
It Rains on Me (Free the West Memphis 3 - Tom Waits/Chuck E. Weiss 1999)

Encore:
Day After Tomorrow (Real Gone)
Don't Go Into That Barn (Real Gone)

*Waits and Taylor alone onstage w/piano and upright bass

--taken from Tom Waits forums

The entire performance was spectacular...amazing start to finish and Tom was in fine form.

Anonymous said...

oh, except switch Goin out West and It Rains on Me. GOW was the final song of the set before the encore.

I dutifully tried to compose a setlist while at the show using my little sisters shoulder as a desk, however, writing in the dark on the back of a postcard didnt produce legible results in the end. I will agree though that the show was amazing and the crowd was great too. Highlights for me being Tom telling us we had worse rythem than him during Tango till they're sore. And of course forgetting the "Make sure they play my themesong" verse. Nobody mentioned the fish story about the Brown..funny too. The lighting gave the venue an almost dustbowl era circus sideshow feel for me. Perfect!

i am doubtless a complete and total geek, but i'd like to point out that "Sins of the Father" is actually "Sins of MY Father"

god have mercy on me.

Sad to say, but I missed a lot of the banter from my seat in the last row of the balconies. (Great view of the Palace, though!) What was his comment about the Brown?

I loved hearing "Rain on Me," especially because Tom seemed to be encouraging a singalong on the chorus!

What an incredible performance! Saw him in Memphis as well, but Louisville was fantastic!

He told a story about a flood that brought the water levels to waist deep in the lobby of the hotel...and that someone'd caught a huge catfish right there in the lobby. The fish had told him a fish story...

There seems to be some confusion over the 'Lie to me' song. From the comments I'd read, I assumed that this was the Howlin' Wolf classic 'Spoonful', mixed with 'Heartattack and Vine' (in the same way that 'Who's been Talkin'' segues into 'Till The Money Runs Out' - referred to some as 'Bye Bye Baby'). However it is still being referred to as the 'lie to me' song. Why?

Can anyone actually clarify that it is Spoonful??

Below are the lyrics to Spoonful (can't see any direct reference to 'lie to me' myself...).

Lyrics: Willie Dixon - Spoonful

It could be a spoonful of coffee
It could be a spoonful of tea
But one little spoon of your precious love
Is good enough for me

Men lie about that spoonful
Some cry about that spoonful
Some die about that spoonful
Everybody fight about a spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful

It could be a spoonful of water
To save you from the desert sand
But one spoon of love1 from my forty-five
Will save you from another man
Men lie about that spoonful
Some cry about that spoonful
Some die about that spoonful
Everybody fight about a spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful

It could be a spoonful of sugar
It could be a spoonful of tea
But one little spoon of your precious love
Is good enough for me
Men lie about that spoonful
Some cry about that spoonful
Some die about that spoonful
Everybody fight about a spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful

It could be a spoonful of sugar
It could be a spoonful of tea
But one little spoon of your precious love
Is good enough for me

Based on the taoes that have started to circulate from other nights Tom is tagging a bit of Spoonful onto Heartattack And Vine. The cover Lie to Me, Baby is a different entity altogether. At least on the recordings I've heard!

I meant "tapes" of course, not "taoes"!!

I was transcended by the show, floating in my seat. He had such a much better time than the show at the Ryman.
But, I must say that the sound was pretty bad for such an historic show. Low feed back hummed through several songs and the balance of "Eyeball Kid" never got worked out. I'm an audio engineer and I'm over-critical of these things, but the effort was amateurish at best.
The sound was impecable in Nashville, but I wouldn't trade the Louisville show for it because he had such a much better time, telling more stories and interacting with the audience. Such a blessing to ever have seen him at all, we're lucky, lucky, lucky.

Thanks Tom,

LJR

Does anyone know where I can get any tapes of the Shows....louisville or Cleveland are the shows I made it too so those would be great, but would like here any/all the others....

I would say the louisville show was a little better then cleveland, you could tell a that he was a little worn from doing two shows, but the setlist in Cleveland was great......

I am pretty sure the Lie to Me song everyone is wondering about is a song called, amazingly enough, Lie To Me. Not sure who wrote it, but it is performed by Jonny Lang on his album, Lie to Me, released in 1997. I found the song on iTunes, it is a blues shouter and I believe this is the song Tom performed. In any event, it was a GREAT show. I enjoyed hearing some new arrangements of his classic songs, hearing 'til the Money Runs Out sort of grow out of Who's been talking was a highlight indeed.
