Songs of dubious origin rescued from cruel fate and now left wanting only to be cared for. Show that you are not afraid and take them home. They don’t bite, they just need attention.”

Orphans was again produced by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan.

Does anyone know if there will be a vinyl release of Orphans? It's the only medium that will supply some grit between the wheels.

Does anyone know whether there will be an Orphans tour in Eroupe, once the CD will be released?

Anonymous said...

Well, considering he came to Europe in '04 (real gone tour), it is probable....

But basically I'm just getting my hopes up, because I really do look forward to seeing him live in good old Europe ;)

However, I'm excited about the Orphans CD Box, the tracks that are available already are really, really good...
Regards,
-Phil

The most of the songs are available and extracted from compilations...aren´t they?

Anonymous said...

Is there going to be a dvd with Orphans?

I am so-o-o-o-o happy to see many of my favorites on here--It's Over, Puttin' on the Dog, Buzz Fledderjon! Thanks so much, Eyeball! The only song I wish were there is Smuggler's Waltz/Bronx Lullaby--but maybe it's known by another name?

How eerie! 4 or 5 MORE ghosts have materialized around Tom on the album cover! Can anyone get a better look than I can at who they might be?

Unknown said...

What? No "Annie's Back In Town?"

Anonymous said...

So are there songs on this that have never been heard (even live)? Also- yeah what happened to the paradise alley songs? Regardless, this is going to be absolutely awesome.

WaitingForWaits said...

The paradise alley soundtrack is avalaible?

Someone knows if the song of Orphans are all extracted from the period of tom in Anti? 1995 -2006

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I was looking for "Annie's Back in Town!" Let's pray there will be a live release, like Dylan's "Bootleg" series, and collect some of the greats like "Annie's Back in Town" and, oh yeah, "Who's Sportcoat is That?"

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I almost forgot Annie's Back in Town. Also, where's Mr, Henry & Silent Night?

Maybe they couldn't get the rights to them?

Anonymous said...

Waiting in Seville, I think it's fair to say that they're all from the Anti years: 1998-present. Some predate his first Anti release (Mule in '99), but follow the time when he and Island parted ways in June 1998. But somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!

Anonymous said...

Mr Henry is licensed by Asylum (on Bounced Checks if you ever find it); Annie and Sportscoat date back to the late 70s; and Silent Night, back to the late 80s. So, I guess there are still Waits rareties to be had.

Anonymous said...

Okay, I'm correcting myself. Some of the songs predate the Anti years: Little Man and Sea of Love among them.

WaitingForWaits said...

Well, what happen with the rareties from Asylum and Island era?

Anonymous said...

Ahhh at long last 'Heigh Ho', Tom's cover of the Walt Disney song, will be widley available.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if the 30 new recordings are new recordings of old songs or brand new songs? There are titles here that have never appeared anywhere before. Are we getting sweet new material?

re: zenora

Here is the Hi-Res version of the album cover.

Can't wait to hear Mr Waits doing "Down there by the train" which he wrote for Johnny Cash and never performed himself (if I'm correct)...

anyways, some of the songs seem to have made it on albums of other artists like RAINS ON ME w/ Chuck E. Weiss and I'VE BEEN CHANGED w/ Hammond (John Hammond??)

much live stuff too, What's NIRVANA?

Anonymous said...

"I've Been Changed" is the last cut from John Hammond's Wicked Grin album, which was all Waits covers, produced by Waits...saw Hammond do an all-Waits show at Knitting Factory LA a few years back. Bad. Ass.

Anonymous said...

There's also a GREAT video of Tom playing 'I've Been Changed' solo w/ a guitar and a boot tap on German TV...anyone know where I can get my paws on that?

WaitingForWaits said...

What are the live songs of Orphans?I think that all songs are registered in study

In an interview with Jim Jarmusch, Waits mentioned two songs written around the time of Bone Machine. They were 'Good Dogwood' (about the man who made the Savior's cross) and 'Shall We Die Tonight?' (about a suicide pact). I'd hoped they'd be on here, but I'm stil enormously stoked.

Here is the link to "I Know I've Been Changed" from German TV. I love this clip:

Also, (I'm guessing from the same show) here is "Ain't Goin' Down to the Well No More" (also a great, great version):

enjoy!

I'm psyched to see "Take Care of All of My Children", but I wish it also came with "I'll Never Let Go Of Your Hand". That one always makes my girl cry a little.

Mahood said...

I think "Never Let Go" on BAWLERS might in fact be "I'll Never Let Go Of Your Hand"..., but that might be open to correction.

Anonymous said...

i'm very excited for this release

new tom waits recordings to memorize = hell yeah

Jamie Summers said...

so, any kind individual fancy annotating the tracklisting with where the songs are originally from, which have only been played live, which are completely new, etc?
plus a list of what is still missing rarities wise?

go oooooooooon!

Orphans is missing:

"Annie's Back in Town" and "Paradise Alley" (Paradise Alley)

"Mr. Henry" (Bounced Checks)

"Silent Night" (S.O.S United)

"It's Alright with Me" (Red Hot + Blue-A Tribute To Cole Porter)

"What Else Is New?" (Small Change sessions)

Strange Weather (Demo)

Chase the Clouds Away (Black Rider sessions)

"I'm Not Your Fool Anymore" (Mississippi Lad with Teddy Edwards)

"Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" (Brother Can You Spare A Dime?)

"Babbachichuija" (Orbitones, Spoon Harps & Bellowphones)

"Saw Sage" (Coffee and Cigarettes)

"Scarecrow" (Foreign Affairs sessions; I've never actually heard this.)

"I'm Crazy 'bout My Baby" (American Heart)

"Do You Know What I Idi Amin" (Extremely Cool with Chuck E. Weiss)

"Big Face Money" (Hold On single)
-----------------------------------
Well, there's enough for another disc.

I am saddened Annie's Back in Town, Silent Night, Paradise Alley, I'm Crazy 'about my Baby, I'm Not Your Fool Anymore, Mr. Henry & It's Alright with Me didn't make it. Guess I'll have t make up a disc of my own.

I wonder which versions Little Drop of Poison and It Rains on Me will be? Probably the lesser known Waits solo ones, not from the Shrek 2 soundtrack and Weiss album respectively.
