Hey Eyeball and others,

This may be a stupid question, but are all the songs on the Orphans collection going to be the same recordings/masterings as from their original releases on soundtracks, B-sides or whatever, or have they been reworked or rerecorded somehow?

The simple answer is...I don't know. However, Tom did re-record all but one of the tracks for the album that eventually became 'Alice' - and a listen to those demos suggests that this was, for the most part, the best choice. They are a pretty raggy affair. Bootlegs tracks like 'Take Care Of All Of My Children' and 'Never Let Go' from 'Orphans' are also quite poor in terms of their recording quality so I suspect he'll re-record those. But the other tracks that he's done for soundtracks (Walk Away, Puttin' On The Dog...), as guest artist (Dog Door...), tribute albums (The Return Of Jackie and Judy, Books Of Moses, What Keeps Mankind Alive...) etc will, I think, stay the same as the originals.

Yeah, and now that I think of it, he also re-recorded the tracks for the Black Rider...of course there was financial backing coming from the production of the play....not sure...I agree that it would be ridiculous to imagine a better recording of a track like Walk Away, but then again, looking back to Big Time, he did some pretty incredible reworkings of songs (Red Shoes for example)...
