I can't agree with them.
Real Gone and Nighthawks as essentials?
And Mule Variations only a checkitout?

Not to mention "Closing Time" is a be careful. Just because the Eagles covered Ol' 55, doesn't diminish the song's greatness.

I believe these reviews are crap. I mean, Closing Time two stars? Alice one? I dont see how anyone who has given any of his albums more than one listen could give ANY less than a three star. And I love Nighthawks, but better than Small Change, Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years? And the only proper review he wrote was on Real Gone. I mean seriously Bone Machine only one star?

Basically, these reviews offended me.

Bone Machine is a one star "for fans only" album?? WTF?

I think this will p*** off a lot of fans. It's basically just a really bad idea to divide Waits' albums in those 'categories'.
Bone Machine & Big Time 'foul'?
Closing Time, Alice & Blood Money 'mediocre'? He must be joking?!!
Of course, everyone's free to have an opinion on Tom's music but if you really wanna write an article about it I expect a bit more depth...

Complete and utter trash.

My letter to the editor. Submitted at 10:45 in the am.

Is he serious?
R.J.,
I’m glad you have an opinion but the Tom Waits fan community would appreciate it if you kept it to yourself like a nice lil’ hack journalist that you appear to be. Your categorization of the Tom Waits catalog shows your utter lack of understanding and grasp of his music. Congratulations! You are a douche bag.

I concur Brian. only a complete douche bag would rate Bone Machine as "for fans only" it's one of my favorite waits albums. And how is real gone essential but Blood Money is "be careful"? Don't make no sense

One daren´t even laugh any more.

Closing Time two stars! Bone Machine one! Alice one! Nighthawks At The Diner better thab Rain Dogs! Ah stop it! It´s a scandal!

Merely smile.

Wow. I'm not sure why Bone Machine is only worthy of one star. Hell's bells, that is the disc that made me a Waits fan.

But maybe that's obvious!

Sounds like they were pulled out of a lucky dip to me. Do it again and we'll get a different result. And for all that, does anybody really care what they think?

I guess most of us who read this blog are a little biased. Most people I know find a lot of Waits' music incomprehensible if not reprehensible. That's up to them.

As long as you like the music who gives a s#!t what anyone else thinks?

I can understand the one star for Bone Machine... If it's a guide for people who don't know the man. But Nighthawks and Real Gone being in the must buy... It's not an easy way to get to know the work of TW. Rain Dogs, Mule Variations and Small Change would definitely be better choices.

Mule Variations had spinned a lot more than Real Gone in my cd player and still will.

Yikes...what a mess. I agree the we shouldn't really care, but what a slap in the face! Rain Dogs as anything but Essential? Mule Variations less than Great? Bone Machine in the basement? Douchebags for sure...

Yep, no doubt about it - thoroughly bizarre ratings.
