Wow, Tom has entered the land of the predictable setlist on this tour. I saw the Phoenix shows, and he's playing the same set every night.
I think that he is mixing it up a little to not be entirely predicatable.
Great crowd in Columbus...one of the best I have ever been a part of. Perfectly quiet and into the music during the songs and appropriately energetic and appreciative after every number...
I have never been happier in a crowd at a show outside of jazz musicians.
I can't see it's all that predictable. For instance two new songs added this time: Cold, Cold Ground and Big in Japan.
Couldn't disagree more with the "predictable" comment. The only two songs that have been played every single night are "Lucinda" and "Jesus Gonna Be Here". We have been treated to several surprises such as "9th and Hennepin" and "Frank's Wild Years" among others. Compared to many tours this summer is one of the most diverse sets you will see.
Way down in a hole has been a regular, too. But I agree with Chad disagreeing...;)
I believe the songlist is incomplete. I distinctly remember "ain't going down to the well", "fish in the jailhouse" and "puttin' on the dog". There may be a couple more, I'm trying to job my memory. I'm trying to compile a CD of the songs he did in the show so if you can remember where those 3 songs above were in the list, I'd appreciate it.
every show has been different in some way ...in songs and in the order of them...
I saw the tulsa show and did enjoy omars playing (but wouldve liked to have seen mark ribot)
I agree, this is one of the most unpredictable tours you will see this summer. There are a few staples that he does each night, but he is really mixing it up and adding a couple songs each night that have not been done before in the tour.
To gwcoupe...I wasn't at the show, but the couple shjows I went to, he mixed parts of Ain't Going Down to the Well with Lucinda.
Yeah, I'm surprised people don't report the set lists as starting with "Lucinda/Ain't Goin' Down to the Well," because he does that combo thing every time around....yet it only gets credited as Lucinda.
Tom was fantastic in Columbus; by the end of the show his suit was drenched with sweat... the highlight (one of the highlights) was when he did "Misery is the River of the World" and got the entire audience to chant "everybody row" as it reached its end (except for the rest of the show some drunken idiot near us on the floor kept screaming out "everybody row!" at random moments)... also excellent was the double encore and "Eyeball Kid" which involved all kinds of squealing growling variations and a special prop or two... and "All the World Is Green" was stunning... probably the only song that missed the mark for me was "Hoist That Rag" which was played too much in a mamba/salsa sort of way... but man, Tom looked in great shape and rocked it, hopefully he can keep going for another decade!
The Columbus show was the best Waits show I have seen in 2 years. They nailed it! The transitions between the songs were quick (so as not to allow idiots to scream out too much), the band was good, Tom sounded great, and the crowd was "behaved". The guitarist is not Ribot, but I thought he was much better than Duke. And Casey has really improved alot. The addition of the woodwind/harmonica player was pure genius. He added alot of dimension to the songs. I give the Columbus show an A+++! (Even after having to pay the 2 "auction-price" tickets, I would say that it was worth it--a $1500 splurge to go to Cowtown, Ohio to hear Tom....) And I'm glad that I did!
r. black,
I too, was close to that guy that kept yelling 'everybody row'...
But at least he only did it 3 or 4 times. I thought it was a little humorous myself because the crowd was so sincere and 'unyellfull' the whole time. Weird and unpredictable yes, but a little 'waitsish' at the same time...
Dude didn't ruin anything for me and brought a smile [somewhat]. I know from your post that it didn't really bother you either...
I loved the crowd in Columbus though.
and yes,
The sweat stains on Tom's overcoat grew more and more with each song. At first I thought it was just the light....but man...He really puts his heart into the shows as is evident by his sweat stains...
After the last encore he looked totally fucking drenched in hard work and sweat...
I can't even imagine what he looked like at the show in Dallas without the AC.
Carry on...
Wow. Blown away, again. I had the absolute worst seats in the house and was glued to my binoculars, and it was still mindblowing. The crowd was fantastic, I thought. I lost it when he actually played Cold Cold Ground...we buried my grandmother the day before, and that song is mine and my father's all time favorite; we're both having it played at our funerals. Great. Now I sound nuts. Point made, however.
blog girl
lastly, shit...
The band was great. I loved hearing torres [sp?] playing new arrangements to the guitar parts. Especially since we get used to the way classic guitar solos are 'to be played' in the classic sense or what is to be expected from the Ribot sense...
This Torres fucker said F that and played these imaginative interpretations that was way off center. Took what we expected and added his completely own interpretation and I personally really thought it was special. I love improve...and although, it wasn't particularly what was happening...I really dug what he added tot he mix...
Not to be long winded on the subject, but I think he definitely deserves some props...
Big Time.
Great show...
YES, GREAT SHOW!!!

Come on up to the House
Columbus show was great - I was lucky enough to meet and shake hands with Tom after the show before he left on his bus with about 10 other fans. Big thanks to Stuart Ross!
....just got back from Knoxville. Tom looked like he injured his voice a bit at the end of "Come on Up to the House." We didn't get the expected "Time" at the end. Hope he's okay.
wow! tom was fantastic. his voice was so powerful. last night was my first time to ever see him and my breath was taken away. singing innocent when you dream with tom was wonderful and he looked great! what a performer.
gwcope: I'm certain they did not play "Fish in the Jailhouse."
Great show! This was my first time seeing Waits. My seats weren't great, but I couldn't give a hoot. I, my girlfriend, my brother, and his friend all drove out together from Chicago for this show. Absolutely worth it.
I think one of the major highlights for me was their arrangement of "Cemetery Polka." So much more energetic than the album version, and the beginning cracked me up. "There's Edna. Don't look. There's Claire. Let's leave."
Also: may I say that Tip-Top and the First Watch Café were pretty great places for a couple drinky-poos and some grub.
I'm surprised at some of the negative comments - I thought the show was incredible, and I found Omar's playing interesting and enjoyable.
Gwcope - you should never go to a show high. Fish in the Jailhouse?
Does anyone know a good spot to find audio from these shows? I would LOVE to get a copy of this one...
Bernie Franks said: "gwcope: I'm certain they did not play 'Fish in the Jailhouse.'"
I apologize to everyone - I have been informed by my concert companions that I am mixing up the show with the fact we listened to Orphans on the way back to Indianapolis. I guess I didn't want the experience to end. An interesting point - apparently the show was as good an experience to me as is listening to the actual albums. The sound really was exceptional - I thanked the sound engineers after the show on my way out.
Seeing Waits was the last item on my "bucket list". Now I will die happy - wait - I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet. Maybe Tom will come back around here again someday. Time to expand the "bucket list".
According to his energy level, Tom must have many good years left in him - thankfully.
juiceless, i did the unthinkable and recorded mr waits with a little hand held mp3 player. if you would like i can email it to you. wow i cant get over this show. i balled my eyes out the entire time.
Olivia I would love to get a copy of the audio!
If it is not to much trouble, send it to xelavelobos@gmail.com
Thank you so much!
Olivia, if you wouldn't mind emailing it, I would be forever in your debt. I'd love a permanent record of the greatest show I've ever been to.
whatdoyoumeanwhatdoyoumean@gmail.com
yes, ill email it to you. i just need to finish importing it into my computer.
It was first time I saw Tom. Voice and energy - no comments, great! It was even better than on CD.
To be honest, I was disapointed that he didn't play my favorite Rain Dogs, he did at other concerts during this tour
:(((( We also got the seats at the rare balcony and it was so far that it looked like watching Tom on TV... Hope to see Tom another time in Toronto some day.
Olivia, if you can please email it to me too:
danycat@rambler.ru
Thank You!
I took many-many pictures. I will select about a dozen and place them somewhere on the photo site. Will give the link.
i will send it to you all. the best way may be an aim transfer.
also does anyone know, was sullivan also playing with tom? i thought the boy playing the congas and clarinet could have been him.
I know I met several people who frequent this blog before / after the show in Columbus and I will not have my recording posted until Tuesday evening; I was hoping to have it up tonight.
It will be on dimeadozen.org
Thank you.
okay my recording is finished. if you would like a copy please send me an im. my aim screen name is "russiandance" if you dont have aim my email is russiandance@aim.com we can figure out some other way to get it your way.

Olivia, I too, would love a copy. crossroadsevh@gmail.com. Thanks!
okay i sent the recordings to all who requested them. if anyone else would like one feel free to im or email me.
awesome show. I was in the 3rd row on the side of the stage by the horn/harmonica player. he kicked ass, playing two saxophones at once for much of the show. I'd never been to the Ohio Theater before, but it really added something for me. Overall, a really great night.
Great show, great experience! A lot of fun!!!
I'm surprised no-one mentioned that they saw Steve Buscemi. He was sitting in row#i/Sec#3...
Olivia - I'd love a copy -

Much obliged.

@michael t regan: those are my fishnets! and i didn't even spy you. great pictures.
we flew down from nyc for the columbus show, and on the return trip the next morning, on a tiny commuter plane, i'd say at least half the plane had been to tom waits. everyone was still giddy from the night before. worth the trip.
and who cares about predictable or not? i only care about the show i saw.
howdy! i've been lurking around on this wesbite for over a year, but don't think i've ever commented. so here goes....
we saw tom waits played house of blues in cleveland last year. amazing show, but exhausting to stand in line for 2 hours and then stand at the venue for the whole show.
the ohio theatre in columbus was the most perfect venue to see waits. it was so beautiful inside the theatre! i told my husband that it felt like being inside a jewlery box. quite magical...
we didn't have great seats, and had a couple of drunk frat guys in front of us who were elbowing each other and high 5-ing throughout the show. incredibly annoying. also, i was curious as to how they ended up there. did they take a wrong turn and miss a dave matthews band concert?
the show was amazing. the sound in the auditorium was wonderful, the set list was genius, and the musicians played multiple instruments to near perfection.
yes, omar torres is no marc ribot, but he did it in his own style and it was commendable. i was also wondering if the younger kid playing bongos and clarinet was another waits son.
a word on set lists in general: if you follow someone around on tour, you're going to see a lot of the same songs, and hear the same jokes. as amazing & prolific as waits is, i don't think he has the time or resources to do all new set lists each night.
i loved "all the world is green" and "hopuse where nobody lives", and of course "eyeball kid" was....stunning. i cried during the singalong to "innocent when you dream". i saw someone else commented about crying during the show, so glad i am not the only one!
we had fun keeping count of the number of porkpie hats while waiting for the show to start. he he he....
it also meant a lot seeing waits since we just got married in vegas a week before and i walked down the aisle to "a little rain." (the minister was fascinated with the song and we gave him a copy of our "wedding mix" CD!)
also, i posted pics from inside the auditorium on a website called "strictlynophotograsphy.com" a really interesting website where folks anonymously post photos of places that you're now allowed to take photos in. and i blogged about it all as well.
ok, i've taken up enough of the comments. glad to be part of this website and the whole tom waits community!!!!
The younger boy playing the congas and clarinet was indeed Sullivan Waits. Tom introduced him the next night in Knoxville, I saw both shows. Tom said: "Assisting on clarinet - Sullivan Waits".
Olivia, did I earn my copy of your recording? Please...
I watched Alex's video of the opener, and it does a fantastic job reproducing the atmosphere and the sound - surprisingly, even at that quality!..

Thanks!
I have to do the editing (basically, bringing the levels up to 'consumer' levels), BUt I thought I would share a song from the Columbus show for you kids

hope its to your liking
The Columbus show was off the hook. A very respectful audience. Tom is quite a performer. His suit coat drenched in sweat by the end of the show. Met some cool cats at the Tip Top pre-show too. The set list's have been a bit predictable on this tour, but who the hell cares? This is Tom Frickin Waits. It is an honor to be in his presence. I do wish he would have played Picture in A frame and Anywhere I lay my head, but that is just me being greedy. I just got back from Bonnaroo and it is amazing how one man can outshine 100 bands. Nice work, Tom.
Olivia - I, too, would like to appeal to your generosity...

much appreciated
I thought that Tom was freakin' awesome! I liked Omar's take on a lot of the songs, the classical/flamenco style was a nice touch. I loved the slightly different takes on some of the songs. Overall, it was amazing!
Hey Olivia, Would you mind sending another copy to me? my email is brianincleveland@gmail.com, thanks alot!!
Dan- that MP3 of Big in Japan came out great! I can't wait to see it on Dime!
In addition to the show opener, I also recorded the first encore. Thus far I have only had time to upload the house where nobody lives, but expect the other two shortly.

Had great fun in Columbus Town! Among the best shows I've ever witnessed! (I thought I was a fan before...) Shook hands with the man himself after the show! Met Steve Buscemi at Starbucks the next day! Overall, it was the best roadtrip ever.
Olivia, I would be forever indebted as well if you happen to see this. Your karma is through the roof! rossymole@hotmail.com
Olivia...
It is worth the shot.
lampshademilktoast@hotmail.com
Forever grateful if so...
Not to encourage more leeching from Olivia, [sorry hun],
But I wanted to say thanks...
And many karmas to you and yours. It was much appreciated tenfold.
your welcome i hope you are all enjoying the show all over again. ive been getting some emails saying that the email from sendspace did not make it to some of you. if you fall in this boat email me and we can try again. :)
I was one of those 10 or so fans that waited for Tom after the show in Columbus and got to shake his hand before he got back on his bus. I have never been so starstruck in all my life. Well worth the wait and also a fantastic show.
Hi Olivia,
This Belgian wanker can't wait to see the man in Paris (3 more weeks to go!!) and would be most gratefull if he could have a little preview to start walking Spanish down the hall.
bart.farasyn@gmail.com
If there's anything I can do, just ask.
Any word on Dan's recording of the show?
Dan, you out there?
Sorry, havent had any opportunity to get the recording ready. I'm aiming for a Wednesday evening release. I will post the link here.
For those waiting for Dan's copy of the show, there is a good sounding copy of the Columbus show as well as a few other dates from the Glitter and Doom tour posted on dimeadozen.org for download. I didn't record or post them but I thought some of you might not be fimiliar with the site and would like to know.
Hi, Olivia, I was at also the Columbus show. Could you send me a link/copy of your audio, if it's not too much trouble? I was at the Akron show two years ago and managed to find a really great recording of that one and I'd love to have one of this one too.
