Animated Egg & sausage

A "typographic music video" for Eggs & sausage by Jackie Lay.

Eggs and Sausage from Jackie Lay on Vimeo.

This is what Jackie Lay has to say about the video:
The photos in the first section were all taken on a snowy night between 14th and 23rd streets in NYC and manipulated in Photoshop (New Yorkers should recognize "Gypsy" from Papaya Dog). The menuboard I bought online and used istopmotion software to film, and the scrawly napkin script is my own handwriting - the jumpy parts are hand-drawn animation, where I wrote the words 25 times each and scanned it, but the smoother parts were done with Aftereffects.

BBC's Heart of Saturday Night

Under the title Heart of Saturday Night, BBC Radio 4 is airing stories by Ian Rankin, AL Kennedy and Willy Vlautin insired by the music of Tom Waits.
All three stories explore the distinctive world created by the legendary musician – a sleazy world peopled by down-at-heel characters on the edge of society, or outcasts and deadbeats singing of loss and longing.
The first story, Come On Up To The House by distinguished Scottish author and stand-up comedian AL Kennedy, takes place in the wee small hours of the morning, when a man reaches out to a total stranger – who might be his last chance of salvation. It is read by Peter Capaldi.
Wednesday's story is Muriel by US novelist and singer-songwriter Willy Vlautin. When Whitey returns to his old neighbourhood bar after his breakdown, he can't help but notice how the regulars do their best to avoid mentioning his dead wife, Muriel. It is read by Ed Stoppard.

The final story on Thursday is Step Right Up by acclaimed Scottish writer and broadcaster Ian Rankin. A young Londoner is taken under the wing of a street market trader, known locally as Saviour, until a fatal stabbing forces him to question the morality of his mentor. The reader is to be confirmed
.

Parnassus trailer

I had only just posted some release dates for the movie, or the UK/Irish Yahoo movie site put an exclusive trailer for The imaginairium of doctor Parnassus online.

The British site for the movie (doctorparnassus.co.uk) is also up in the air, although the content is about the same as that of its American counterpart doctorparnassus.com: "full site coming soon".

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus release dates

You might be eagerly awaiting the release of Terry Gilliam's picture The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus in which Tom Waits portrays the Devil. In that case, it's worth keeping an eye on imaginariumofdrparnassus.com.

They have already reported the following release dates:

United Kingdom: October 16
Italy: October 16
Czech Republic: October 29
France: November 11
Germany: December 3
Switzerland: December 3

And te movie will also be shown at the Toronto Film Festival

Cars in the Library

The Tom Waits Library has opened a new section: everything you always wanted to know about Tom Waits and his cars can be found under extras > cars

Official Tom Waits Flickr stream

The official TomWaits.com has a Tom Waits page on picture sharing site Flickr. Check out the photographs by Michael O'Brien, Peter Anderson, Michale Putland, Henry Diltz, Anton Corbijn and plenty of others.

The Thalia Theatre is staging the Waits/Brennan/Wilson version of Büchner's play Woyzeck next year. The play, directed by Jette Steckel is to premier in January (brochure - pdf).

It is worth noting that The Black Rider and Alice were originally staged at this theatre based in Hamburg, Germany in respectively 1990 and 1992.

Tom Waits The Document

The Chrome Dreams website lists Tom Waits The Document, a two disc sets featuring one disc of "exclusive interviews" and one DVD disc featuring a documentary with "rare footage, video interviews and contributions from (his) closest associates". Price: £9,99 (excl. delivery costs).
This 2 Disc set celebrates the incredible career of Waits, via a superb 100 minute DVD documentary film about the man and his work, and a 65 minute interview disc featuring never previously released recordings, during which he shows himself to be a raconteur of quality and one of the sharpest brains in showbusiness.
It's worth noting Chrome Dreams previously released the Under Review dvd's (1971-1982 and 1983-2006) and the The Classic Interview cd back in 2005 but there is no indication about how different the new material might be.

No word about the UK relesase date either, but Amazon  sets the US release date at September 15th.

UPDATE (Aug. 6): the British Video Association  has the release as September 28th in the UK and Play.com (same release date) will do a pre-order for €10,49 (£7.99) free delivery.

Big Time Waits tribute

Chicago's Beat Kitchen is programming B1G T1ME, a Tom Waits tribute by Matt Ulery and Loom on Sunday, August 9th. If anyone has more info, don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Stained glass

We've all seen or even bought the t-shirts, the drawings and the paintings. But this is somewhat of a first for me: a portrait of Tom Waits in stained glass (25" x 17.5") by stain glass junkie Filbee.
