Vinyl releases

Looks like we might have some new vinyl releases to look forward to: Heart of Saturday Night, Closing Time, Small Change and Nighthawks at the Diner are all scheduled for a June 29 release according to Amazon.com.

A special Mule Variations 11th Anniversary release - 'limited 180-gram vinyl w/exclusive Jim Jarmush photo of Tom (print) ' - is set for April 12th.

Looking forward to them, but: What would the new vinyl releases offer that the old ones did not? More grams? 180 grams? And can anyone explain what more grams add? Longer durability? Better sound?

(7660 grams at the moment. New release dates with updated weight details to be expected in near the future...)

Longer durability, its just a "stronger" record. More dense and survives time a bit better.

Hi, that's some creative approach about durability, density and survival, Chelsea...

180g oer even 200 g vinyls simply mean better sound... The point of having music on a media is supposed to give the user of it as good as possible quality. Discs made in the 70's were mostly light weight, all for the dollars...

The heavier the disc, the least influence imperfections will give to the spinning of the disc. The best turntable are having a very dense platter (even glass), for the same reason.

if on top virgin vinyl is used, the used material is pure (contrary to mixes with 30% recycled vinyl), adding even more to the sound quality, as impurities of the recycled part could result in uneven hardness, ...

It seems like Wiki can tell you way much more about this :) I got carried away on that page by a golden disc sent into space... Not exactly a Waits record, but it contains sounds of dogs, not bad...

I bought the Mule Variations reissue yesterday. It is a gorgeous package (though I'm not sure how it differs from the original issue other than the Jim Jarmusch print).

Unfortunately, my copy came with a huge scratch on side on of disc one resulting in an obnoxious click in the first four songs. I called the store where i bought it but they are of course sold out. I also emailed Anti to see if there is anything they can do or if anyone else encountered this problem.
