Not sold out

Are the anti-scalping measures paying off? Are tickets too expensive? Or is Mr. Waits touring too often? Whatever it might be, the US leg of the Glitter and Doom tour so far has only sold out the venues in Phoenix, Houston, Columbus and Atlanta it seems.

Tickets still available for the other shows are not the best seats in the house, but a minute ago I could have bought balcony seats or similar for Jacksonville, Tulsa, Knoxville, Mobile and Birmingham. El Paso (orchestra floor) and Saint Louis (rear orchestra) seem to have even nicer spots left. Not to mention Dallas, where you can still buy general admission tickets.

I wonder how things will develop in Europe, where sales started yesterday (Milan).

This is good news for me. If nothing else, maybe old Tom will finally remember that the entire east coast actually exists and that some of us who are not wealthy or free enough to take off on a cross-country trip might enjoy seeing him live in our lifetimes!

Yeap, the same thing may happen in Europe. People are very upset about the ticket prices. I saw some really strong comments about the latest tour ( you can read some of them below). I can understand some of them but Im not gonna complain about the prices, I will have to travel a lot - by train, plain and a car to get to his concert and it's gonna cost me more than my monthly pay but this year I had a feeling he is going to tour so I started saving - Tom Waits fan should always be prepared!

"Dear Tom Waits, you are truly an asshole of global proportions. Playing such few small places in Europe and charging horrendous prices and making it impossible for true fans to purchase tickets because of the anti-scalper rules really pisses me off! And I am surely not alone. Many of your fans have been waiting literally for decades to see you, and you cannot be bothered to play a few more shows or play in bigger venues. Thank you, asshole!"

DEAR TOM, NO LONDON GIG, £95 A TICKET, PLUS TRAVEL AND HOTEL !!! I THINK ILL PASS. THANKS FOR BEING SO KIND TO YOUR FANS. NOW CAN I FIND AN ADVERT THAT SOUNDS LIKE ME. THE RICH GET RICHER ME THINKS, TIME TO FIND ANOTHER HERO.

3.Howler // May 25, 2008 at 11:26 am

im a 17 year old student on less then low wage, living in norwich is a chore i thought hmm 100 miles to london ok suits me but paying to go to dublin or somewhere, this is crazy! Tom you grow up with little money so surely i thought you would know exacly what its like, i though i would never get to see my hero well now it turns out i might not, fuck it i try to stay out of moden music all the teco crap on the radio thats not really music, BUT AT LEAST THEY CAN TREAT THE FANS RIGHT!!!
looking up to waits for 8 years this hurts, why has Mr, Waits done this? he would be better off not having a tour and not upsetting a lot of people. Howler fan to the end well tom thats not far now.

Yeah the ticket prices suck, but honestly I kind of like his playing in parts of the country that never get to see many good acts.

Plus it makes it more of an adventure to go see him when you have to travel.

I agree the ticket prices are definitely too high, plus booking fee the Dublin gigs are nearly £110 when converted from euro. 3 dates in one city at over 100 quid a ticket?!

However, I could not give one clean fuck for the people in London complaining there's no gig, they've been getting it sweet for years. Try living in Ireland, or any other "out of the way" country, we get passed over for gigs all the time.

It makes me so sad that so many people are complaining about everything..the ticket prices, the fact that He´s not playing in London etc. Of course its a lot of money and of course we all would like Tom in OUR TOWN but we have to stay realistic. When I first heard that He´s touring Europe I expected much more enthusiasm from His fans than this.. :-(

I don't get the bashing in here. Think about the costs of putting on a tour like this - with gas prices being what they are, we have to expect higher prices - it costs more to move the people and equipment around now. Actually, the prices are about what I expected. There aren't many people in the world who would be worth it, but Tom Waits is one of them. And if you don't like the prices, don't take it personally as an offense from Waits himself - he doesn't just decide what the cost will be by himself and turning on him for this is stupid. I personally am stoked.

Chris said...

Remember that Tom toured continuously in the 70's, and the tickets went for $5 or less. Although that doesn't help us younger fans, I think he deserves every penny.

jerseyraindog said...

It was always going to be expensive though wasn't it. Those prices aren't much more than his last tour and though I baulked at paying £65 a ticket then for 2 balcony seats in London I'm glad I did. I've seen a lot of bands and artists in my life and a Tom Waits show knocks spots off all of them. I even saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last month in the very venue Tom played in London in 04. Although it was good and I was glad to finally see them perform it just didn't compare. I'm lucky to be able to afford tickets I agree and I have to travel by plane wherever he plays because I'm based in Jersey, but wherever he plays people will be disappointed. He can't play everywhere. And as far them always being short tours, don't forget he's in his sixties now...

Zorak said...

Actually, Tom Waits is 58. He turns 59 on 7th December.

If this also happens in Europe, that will make it easier for me to get tickets. I'm going for one of the Edinburgh shows on sale tomorrow morning.

apparently Milan is not selling as fast as the last european tour.

Burntfaced Jake said...

It must be the anti-scalping plans that are slowing ticket sales. I seem to remember rogue ticket agencies offering tickets for £600+ the last time Tom played London. Sales may be slow but this way people who genuinely want to go and see Waits have a reasonable chance of scoring a ticket. As for bleating about no London dates give us a break. Are people afraid of getting vapourised if they set foot outside the M25? To be honest I'd rather see Tom in most other venues than the corporate bierkeller otherwise known as the Carling Apollo. Also, if you live in SE England and are moaning spare a thought for most of the the rest of Europe which hasn't figured in the tour plans. Travelling from Moscow, Berlin or Stockholm is a bigger deal than getting from London to most of the venues on this tour

Unknown said...

Last time en Europe, the internet went down because of ticketsharks. And the day after, prices were 4 or 5 times higher on ebay. 120-150 Euros is a lot of money for a ticket, but not that extraordinary. I've seen Stones twice in Denmark the past two years, and every time at about 130 Euros - in stadiums holding 40-60.000 people. I'm paying 100 to see Lou Reed this summer. All and all the Waits-prices are not that unusual, and personally I don't want him in "bigger venues"

apoivre said...

Bought a ticket for one of the Paris dates - and almost 2 hrs after they went on sale, too. At EUR67, it seems to be among the lower priced gigs as well.
(I'd expect Prague to be quite cheap when it goes on sale. And it's rather inexpensive to get to from most of Europe, Britain in particular)

ichiaye said...

The man is a living legend. Period. Bruce Springsteen just played 3 nights in Dublin in a 40,000 seater venue and tix were about two thirds the Tom Waits price. I really don't understand the Waits-bashing. IMO It's a combination of the way modern economics, price-elasticity and the music industry works. I would far rather pay a high price for a smaller venue than a (not much) lower price for a (much) bigger venue. I think the anti-scalper measures are brilliant and it's great that those profiting (not proiteering) from the tour are those who DESERVE TO BE PAID FOR THEIR WORK, riggers, techies, runners, venue managers, planners, musician etc. etc. I travelled to see him in Amsterdam in 2004 - it wasn't cheap and I wasn't rich but you know, what price a memory? I've told the stories many times. Perhaps the sacrifice you're willing to make is a measure of your dedication. Don't buy that next pair of Nike runners you had your eye on! Of course not everyone there will be the most deserving Tom Waits fanatics. To (most) of those who will be there, it's not just another gig and Tom Waits isn't a charity.

I live in London and am quite happy to travel to Paris to see him (got tickets this morning, eventually!).
It would be great to see him play London though in the future.
How about the Royal Festival Hall or Royal Albert Hall next time though?
Sick of the Appollo.

Bitch Bitch Bitch. I've seen Tom 4 times and would pay any price and travel nearly anywhere to see him again and consider it an honor!

I have some theories: -Most of Tom's fanbase is concentrated in urban areas, mostly on the coasts of the U.S.

-Many people are not willing/able to take off several days from work, midweek, to fly to somewhat "remote" areas (such as cities in Oklahoma and Alabama) to see a concert

-Ticket prices aren't really too high, it's just that along with the other associated costs (travel, hotel, taking off work) the concert roadtrip adds up to a really big bill.

Those are just my own theories.

Unknown said...

Let's be realistic here...the tickets prices are high yes, but very reasonable, all things considered. And in comparison to some other tours (Madonna $350 front floor, George Michael $200 front floor,Clapton $174 ) they're considerably lower.

And the statement from an earlier post "making it impossible for true fans to purchase tickets" is incredibly stupid. I had no trouble purchasing tickets at all and I'm a true fan. Just have to be able to push a few buttons on a computer...don't see what's so impoassible about that.

Just be grateful Tom Waits is touring period. I was fortunate enough to see Stevie Wonder last fall, touring again after a 10 year hiatus and was glad to pay the $125 dollars for a once in a lifetime event. I don't get what this bitterness is about. Either find a way to go or don't but stop whining.

jrawl said...

I'm delighted the shows are under subscribed as it allows me some level of confidence that I'll actually get a ticket... I'm travelling to Jacksonville and hopefully tomorrow Dublin as well for the shows.

I would and have travelled further, I agree with waytoblue, anti up and buy a ticket or stop whining and move on...

bunbury said...

I don't get the bashing either. Yeah, the ticket prices are high and the anti-scalping method makes it hard on some people but I am still seeing 3 shows for 1/2 of what I paid a 'friend' for 1 ticket during Orphans. As far as the anti-scalping methods making it difficult on younger fans who maybe don't have credit cards? If you persuse any of the popular TW boards, we collectively found a few safe, legal, & ethical ways around this. I like that he plays odd, small venues. You don't really expect him to play LA, do you? Can I afford the tickets? No. Can I afford the gas or hotel money? No. But TW is the only one I'll come out of my hidey hole for and this'll be the first vacation I've had since Orphans. There's no one else like him and I can always make more money.

Discordia said...

Prohibitively expensive tickets for Europe - £100 is just ridiculous, even for Tom - and the smattering of venues in far away locations with nothing at all in the main bit of Britain has meant that I'll either have to go without food for a month or go without Tom for a couple more years, and a girl needs to eat! Add the ticket to the travel and the associated costs and it's over £300 - I just can't afford to go, a realisation that's left me literally in tears. It's like my tent blew down, my bonfire got rained out, my roof has a leak, my puppy exploded, my whisky bottle smashed... my head hurts. Maybe next time. Maybe one day. Maybe.

2for2true said...

Living in Knoxville, i count myself lucky that Tom's last two tours have had numerous dates in the Southeast. This tour, I even get him in my hometown, where he hasn't played since 1976. I've got no complaints about the locations, but hell - I flew to seattle four years ago for the Real Gone show, so I'd make the trip somehow, regardless of where he played.

My problem is with the ticket prices. This is the third highest ticket I've ever bought, behind $160.00 for the Stones and $200.00 for Van Morrison. I'm guessing the slow sales for Orphans and Real Gone have shown Tom the only way to cash in on his success is to tour, and he's making the most out of it.

I think most celebs have a difficult time relating to how the recession and high gas prices have hit everyone. Maybe slow ticket sales for the big summer tours will sober them a bit.

third:

Wow, there are truly a bunch of whiny little children leaving very funny comments about Mr. Waits being an "asshole" for not touring more and charging high ticket prices. I have to laugh when I read these statements. But then, I have two front row seats so maybe that is why I'm laughing! Or maybe it is because it sounds so funny to hear people calling someone an asshole for not touring wider across the country! Here's a tip: study hard, get a good job, save your money, see the show! It's that simple! Or just realize that life isn't fair and you don't always get what you want. Either way just quit whining, it's pathetic!

See you at the show!

I'd like to chime in here with a response to all the people complaining about the "out of the way" cities and how he's not playing New York, LA, or London. I live in an "out of the way" city - New Orleans, to be specific. We have a great local music scene here, but as for big touring acts, we're usually out of luck. I can't tell you how many times I've seen something on the web about one of my favorite bands going on tour, only to look at the schedule and see all the usual cities in the US (New York, LA, San Fran, Chicago, etc) listed but nowhere near where I live. I think it's cool that Tom is playing some places that don't normally get the big names. I'm sorry if people in New York and London feel slighted, but my suggestion to them would be to open up the newspaper and check out all the other amazing acts playing this weekend who will probably never come anywhere near Prague or Mobile, AL. Living in a big city does not guarantee you the right to a Tom Waits concert.

Rubiao said...

The last Waits show I saw people were paying well over 800 dollars, so I think the anti-scalping measures are working perfectly. Someone complained about his 100 dollar ticket price when they paid 200 for Van Morrison. According to my pricing system, Van Morrison: $200, then Waits would be $50,000. And fuck you NYC, London, and L.A. You'll get your chance. In the meantime, buy a damn plane ticket and see what its like in the rest of the world.

Grove said...

Well, I'm from London and last time had no chance of getting any tickets - got offered one by a tout for 350 quid. I passed on that and have been kicking myself ever since.

No more - after a frantic weekend on the web, I'm booked for both Milan (x2) and Paris. It will cost me an arm and a leg, but it is a once in a lifetime experience.

We can always moan about the price, but considering who we are talking about and the kind of venues he will play, I feel it is all quite appropriate.

The bottom line is - I'm in and I can't wait!

It's one of those things. When I started listening to Tom three three years ago, i only just missed his last show that was in Europe, but the truth is, I wouldn't have paid £100 to see him. jerseyraindog said...

I got Paris tickets several hours after they went on sale. I have a feeling that mainland Europe tickets are shifting slower due to higher costs yet Dublin and Edinburgh are the first opportunity that lots of folks in Ireland and the UK will have had to see him live so they're selling a lot faster. Pretty sure Edinburgh is sold out as well now as I had just had a quick check. I reckon the scalping thing worked though as the last London show sold out in under an hour and the promoter said he could have put him on for a couple of weeks and he would have sold out.

Anonymous said...

Are you guys f-ing kidding me? Do you expect him to tour for $30? Do you also expect him to tour stadiums? This is how he tours every single time he comes out. And given the demand I'm surprised the tickets weren't more. If you are a huge fan- charge it. If you don't have a credit card- get one (my god big business is dying to have you). To call him an asshole, or shit all over his music is just totally unfair. Don't be a fan- don't go. He can't please everyone.

rev said...

Honestly, the price is high.. but no higher than other big stars are charging when they tour rarely. Also, when he went in I think 2006 through Amsterdam, I tried to get tickets for that (as I was going to be there coincidentally), and they sold out on that dutch site in under 5 minutes. Ebay for scalpers? $500 EACH.

I have NO complaints about an $85 ticket without dealing with scalpers. Period.

In all likelihood, the Knoxville show will sell out within the next week or so. I spoke with a local ticket agent who told me there were less than 50 tickets available.

When he did the last US tour, it was refreshing to have him hit Nashville and Louisville. Both shows required a two hour drive, but that's a stone's throw compared to past tours. It's rare for artists to focus on this area of the country instead of the usual larger cities. To this day, I still couldn't believe it when I saw the itinerary and did several double-takes along with checking my glasses to make sure I was reading it correctly.

A Wanderer said...

I've got my tickets, and I'm glad, but I do sympathize with many of the complainers (I love complainers and I love to complain, the only complaining I find annoying are people who complain about others complaining).
The fact is, I'm spoiled on Bob Dylan.
I've been a Dylan fan much longer than a Waits fan, and while I don't mean to expect the world of Tom, the fact is Dylan has given me a lot more. Somebody on here said "Do you expect Tom to tour for 30 dollars?" My first Bob Dylan show in 2002 cost me 35. For Bob Dylan. 35 Dollars for Bob Dylan.
And it's been between 45-60 for all the shows since then, but the others shows have included multiple co-headliners like Willie Nelson, Jimmie Vaughn, The Dead and Elvis Costello, not to mention one 45 dollar concert treating me to a surprise 3 song appearance by Eric Clapton.
I'm not going to get into any stupid "Who's Better?" argument. But the fact is, Dylan is every bit a can't miss-artist as Waits (if not more), he plays bigger venues, that doesn't hurt him, and he plays nearly year-round. And for those who say Tom is getting old, Dylan just turned 67, and the past few years the man has given me and the rest of his fans countless amazing concerts, going above and beyond what one could ask of him.
I was fortunate to see my first Waits show on the Orphans Tour in Louisville. It was an excellent show, and I'm looking forward to at least one more. But I confess that the "exclusivity" of these shows, the credit cards, the scalpers, the small venues and the short tour dates is all unpleasantly new to me. Bob Dylan has spoiled me.

And one more thing regarding Tom getting old...I also saw Pinetop Perkins last year...and he's 95. And he even did an autograph session.

Re the ebay sellers...Anti should buy these tickets...then also prevent the sellers from gaining entry!

I managed front row of the circle for Monday night at Edinburgh. Very chuffed. The anti-scalper rules seem to work. But why give buyers 7 days to give names? Why not just 3? Needs to be even tighter.

I also think that ebay should only allow tickets to be re-sold for face value plus 10%. Then genuine sellers get their money back but little more. Ebay are as guilty as the scalpers! And as greedy!

Dave said...

I think the organisers have got this about right. Obviously it would be great if Tom performed in our living room for free, but that's unlikely. The cheaper seats at Edinburgh are about the same as a big football match, or a London performance of a crappy musical, so hardly "ridiculous". And the 2 per person thing has ensured that all true fans can get tickets - selling out in a couple of hours (as the Edinburgh shows did), rather than a couple of minutes (as his last UK appearances did).

hey Alice,
I had the same problem. I payed my ticket for the show in Paris with my mother's creditcard and our lastnames don't even match. But I e-mailed the ticket-agency and they told my that it was no problem as long as I had an photo-ID. I don't know if it's the same in Prague, but it would be absurd if they assumed that everyone has a creditcard. So don't worry.

Just went to check Ticketmaster UK

Tried to book tickets to get to the tom waits page- naturally it says Sold Out but the page still has info about the anti scalping rules and included the same message as my confirmation.

"Ticketmaster will contact all customers to collect the name of your guest (you must reply to Ticketmaster within 7 days). Only the person purchasing the tickets and the guest will be admitted on the night. Names will be printed on tickets and EVERYONE must bring a form of photo ID on the night – the purchaser must also bring the card used to make the booking".

Think I didn't get an email as I had pre-registered with them to speed up the booking process to make sure I didn't get timed out.

As you say, it might vary from country to country but can't see how else they can do it if they didn't ask when you booked and didn't give information as to how to get the names to them?

No doubt someone will post about this on one of the forums.

Just out of curiosity, I was looking at ebay and there are Tom Waits tickets all over it. Some claim they will meet you at the venue and "escort" you in but I'm wondering if they will even be permitted to do that. Another claims to have actual hard tickets and even posted a scan which must be phony.

The worst was someone trying to sell pit tickets for some ungodly amount ($3000 or something) and saying they will meet you inside the venue and basically just trade seats.

I hope none of these lowlifes are successful in their attempts to rip people off. As a musician myself, I find scalping horribly unethical and think it is just wrong on many levels.

I bought the paris ticket for 25 and I sent the e-mail for the seat assignations but I don't have received an answer.
What do I do?

For pricing reference, a friend wanted to see Madonna here in Houston. (barf, but whatever) $350 for the best seats, $55 for the crappy seats. Floor seats on ebay for $500. THANKS TOM!

I have actual tickets (non-eletronic) for the St. Louis show, but they're the cheapest, 3rd row from the back seats. I suppose Metrotix will mail those out since they're not prime seats.
