First comments are indicating this was 'a much better show' than the first Phoenix night. With Seth Ford-Young 'more comfortable' and a band that has 'improved a lot'.
The crowd on the other hand 'seemed a little less crazy'. Although not every one agrees, of course.

There are some pictures over at Backbeat online.

One of the things I really admire about Tom is how he changes the set list. So many artists tour the same show each night...this is great as I was reluctant to view the set list in a way as I have 2 european shows booked...but I have no idea what I am gonna get! Nice!

personally, I would have favoured the set list from the first night. but what does it matter; I wasn't there. but it pains me to see that he didn't play Come On Up To The House. This is possibly one of my all time favourites. sure hope he plays it in Dublin!

plus; 4 more songs on the first date? that's harsh! is that 'cause it was opening night?

What song is FALLIN' DOWN ?

I would have preferred to be at the first show, because he played "Invitation to The Blues" and "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis." I guess preferences are a matter of age, as I was introduced to Waits' music in about 1976. So I'm hoping he does some of his older stuff, on piano, when I see him in St. Louis.

Fallin Down is from, "Big Time". You had the same question I did, and I obsessed about it until an answer was found.
This will save you that obsession.

C'mon guys, even Scarlett Johannson knows Fallin Down is on Big Time!

Uh, some of us are newer to this righteous church there tough guy.
easy, and may peace be upon you.

Who is Scarlett Johannson? :-)

I caught both shows. I liked the intensity of the first night a bit better, and he only played 1:45 last night. Great to hear 16 Shells, though! Woman sitting next to me kept texting someone, seemed a bit weird to me! He did the disco hat bit and also had fun kicking a ringside boxing bell. I wish my basement looked like his set!

I'll be in Dublin for a couple of those shows, looking forward to the Summer of Tom!

Idnearthesae,

I first saw Tom in 1976 too.

Caught him in Asheville in 2006 and have front row seats for Knoxville.

Suprise us Tom !

There is no such song as Fallin' Down

Hmmm...I thought overall the first show was a little better than the first. Not complaining about either show, though, of course! Just responding the Eyeball Kid's post that the general consensus is the second show was better. The band (Tom included) flubbed a few times in the second show--more noticeable to me than the first show.

As mentioned in previous posts, it was great that the setlist differed from the first night. Very rewarding for those who went to both shows.

I've corrected the title - "Falling down" it is.

I was wondering if anyone who attended the Phoenix shows could let us know how the paperless ticket system worked...were there long lines? I'm going to El Paso and just wanted to know what to be prepared for.
Thanks!

I was at last night's show in the balcony, and for the first seven songs a security guard repeatedly stood in front of me, blocking my view of the stage. He told me he was trying to catch people using cameras, but he was rude and obnoxious and didn't seem to care that other people were trying to enjoy the show. His radio crackled during some of the most poignant ballads, like Falling Down and Day After Tomorrow. When his cell phone started ringing during Sins of the Father, I asked him to please be quiet and he copped major rent-a-cop attitude. I've waited 30 years for TW to come back to Phoenix, and 20 since I saw him in LA, and this is what I get for my $107 (including ticketmaster gouging charges...)???

super fast, almost no line. the folks at the door just swiped your card, and handed you the tickets, no problems at all as far as i could tell.

"Cemetary Polka" on both nights so far. Nice. I hope he plays it in El Paso too. It's my favorite Tom Waits tune. I also hope he plays "Invitation to the blues". This will be the first time I've seen him live. I'm extremely excited.

Yeah good question, how is the paperless ticketing working out? I'm ticketed for Houston show this Sunday, 8pm, wondering whether it's advisable to get there much later than 8:15 or so. Or is Tom into punctuality?

I'm so stoked for the Dallas show! Never thought I'd be praying for a Monday to hurry up and get here. :)

First night set list looks better to me. That said, it's Tom Waits, so I'd be happy with him singing show tunes.

Also, I have the same question as some posters above me - plz give us some info on how the paperless ticketing worked.

n: Saw the first show. The paperles system was actually awesome. You just give the guy the credit card you bought them with... he slides it into a handheld machine and your tickets print right out. The lines went very quickly. So yeah, it worked great. Not an empty seat in the house.

I think he is on stage at 8.00...!!! That's the way it is here in the UK. Is the States the same? Don't be late now...

b-Zen said...

Go in at 8. You may wait 20-30 minutes but it's better to be safe than miss anything.
I went to the door at 7:45, got right in, was in my seat at 8:00 (when the show was supposed to start). Tom went on at 8:30.

I'm going to see Tom in Edinburgh and am so excited about it. But I realized I'm going to be in Ireland by the time they send the tickets to me... in CA.

I've been on the phone with UK Ticketmaster many times now and still have no clue how I'm going to get my tix! B/c of the stringent rules, I can't just pick them up at will call. WTF?? I love the anti-scalping stuff but COME ON.

Neleh,

I attended the 1st night in Phoenix with my brother in law. The paperless ticket system worked fine. Once the doors were opened the line moved quite fast. But I must have been checking my wallet every 10 minutes before then to make sure I had brought the right credit card and my id.

junkyardheart said...

By the way, for those of you without tickets. Keep trying. I purchased a pair of tickets the moment they went on sell and only managed to get 22nd row. The night before the 1st Phoenix show I checked Ticketmaster just out of curiosity and a pair of 10th-row center seats were offered. I could not purchase them of course out of fear that all of my seats would be cancelled. :-(

Chris and everyone,

Thanks for the good news about the paper tickets....I had to laugh, I have had several nightmares about bringing the wrong credit card, or losing it or..you get it!

El Paso here I come!

For anyone who has seats further back or in the balcony at the up coming shows: bring binoculars!!
I am so glad I brought mine.

Also, as I attended the second night only I am slightly bummed that he played a shorter set. However, he played two of my top favorite songs and there is no possible way i could complain!
[and he did do the disco-ball hat again]

I preferred the first night. He didn't have as much energy on Wednesday and played fewer songs. Less audience interaction, and he was on the bus out of there before the music of the last song had finished. Still, a great experience and the paperless ticket system worked flawlessly.

I agree, as far as "the band" is concerned, they left something to be desired. And that's putting it nicely. Omar was a mere shell of Ribot or Gore when you could hear him. The rest of them seemed like they had a hard time just following along. Too bad. Thank God it didn't really matter, since Tom was up there, being Tom. But I do miss his old band. ALOT.

ok I went both nights 2nd way tighter as a unit. I prefer the crowd to be quiet which they were 2nd night. set list was better
1st night but it wasn't played with intencity. paperless ticket is a breeze no long lines. first night we did that walkie talkie incident.

I didn't think the band was all that bad. Yeah, Seth seemed like he was stumbling a bit during the piano pieces, but so did Tom. I heard Omar perfectly fine from where I was sitting, and he had Ribot's off-beat Cuban thing down to a science. Unfortunately for him, he was mainly there to play the parts that others created, and from that perspective he did it quite well. I don't think we got to hear his personality much beyond the intro to All The World Is Green, which was truly fabulous.

Just viewed a couple of the videos on You Tube. That band needs to GET IT TOGETHER. The songs are not extremely melodic, so the rhythm is the key to everything...... Might want to import Larry Taylor for a few shows, and maybe another guitar player, too....

The Youtube videos do the 6/17 show absolutely no justice. I hate those damn two bit videos. I urge you not to pre-judge the band based on them.
