The Prairie Home Companion (update)

In an interview with Chicago public radio station WBEZ, director Robert Altman talked about the cast for the Prairie Home Companion movie and he mentioned Lyle Lovett and Kevin Kline were to play the two cowboy singers. Earlier reports indicated Tom Waits was to star as one of those in the movie. IMDB.com and ioncinema.com still have Waits listed as a member of the cast.

From STAR TRIBUNE (Minneapolis, MN):

Lake Wobegon movie adds some A-list stars

Michelle Pfeiffer and Kevin Kline are the latest stars to come aboard director Robert Altman's movie version of "A Prairie Home Companion." Altman dropped those names during a recent interview with Chicago public radio station WBEZ.

"I'm literally doing a film of one of [Garrison Keillor's] radio broadcasts, only I'm filling it with a lot of movie stars," Altman said.

He previously announced that Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin would play the Johnson Sisters, the two remaining members of a failed singing act. Other cast members he named include Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits, Maya Rudolph from "Saturday Night Live" and, of course, Keillor himself.

"He'll be in it prominently, because he's a genius," said Altman. Keillor also wrote the screenplay for the film.

It is expected to shoot at the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul sometime this winter.
