This...is awesome. Thank you!
Hey Eyeball and others,
This may be a stupid question, but are all the songs on the Orphans collection going to be the same recordings/masterings as from their original releases on soundtracks, B-sides or whatever, or have they been reworked or rerecorded somehow?
Anti- talks about "30 new recordings" among the orphans songs. I wonder if this will be live recordings from the Orphans tour?! Does anyone know more about this issue?
The first full-length MP3 from the new Tom Waits three-disc set Orphans launched yesterday! It’s for the song “Bottom Of The World” and it is from Disc one, titled Brawlers. Hit the link below to check out the new Tom Waits artist page and get this new MP3!

The simple answer is...I don't know. However, Tom did re-record all but one of the tracks for the album that eventually became 'Alice' - and a listen to those demos suggests that this was, for the most part, the best choice. They are a pretty raggy affair. Bootlegs tracks like 'Take Care Of All Of My Children' and 'Never Let Go' from 'Orphans' are also quite poor in terms of their recording quality so I suspect he'll re-record those. But the other tracks that he's done for soundtracks (Walk Away, Puttin' On The Dog...), as guest artist (Dog Door...), tribute albums (The Return Of Jackie and Judy, Books Of Moses, What Keeps Mankind Alive...) etc will, I think, stay the same as the originals.

They're bootlegs to us, but TW can probably get the original recordings, which are almost certainly excellent quality. It's not like he's searching P2P networks on the internet to download songs for his box set.
True, True.
Yeah, and now that I think of it, he also re-recorded the tracks for the Black Rider...of course there was financial backing coming from the production of the play....not sure...I agree that it would be ridiculous to imagine a better recording of a track like Walk Away, but then again, looking back to Big Time, he did some pretty incredible reworkings of songs (Red Shoes for example)...
I've heard the original version of Lost at the Bottom of the World on the Long Gone soundtrack and as I remember it had a more stripped down sound of just drums, bass and guitar. The mandolin might be an overdub, or it might be a brand new recording.
Or I might be wrong...
