Waits edits Mojo magazine

Tom Waits is the guest editor for the July issue of Mojo, which celebrates it's 200th birthday.

The special anniversary issue comes with a free cd with 15 tracks compiled and sequenced Tom Waits. It stars Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf, Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte, Cliff Edwards, Big Mama Thornton, Prisonaires, Hank Williams and many more.

The magazine itself includes an interview with Harry Belafonte, an encounter between Hank Williams and Tom Waits and Waits' own 'ultimate picks': 'a huge, carefully compiled selection of the man’s essential songs, films and books. Featuring James Brown, Alex Chilton, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, James Dean, David Lynch and many more.'

This issue should go on general sale in the UK next week.

(Thanks to Dan, Samuli, David, Liam and Fergal and everyone else (you know who you are Jarlath), who mailed me about this)

Enjoyable issue. You get the impression that Waits was quite involved with it. The CD is very good too.

Great issue, definitely worth picking up. Also mentions a new studio album is coming next year!

The accompanying CD is indeed fantastic. It compiles a lot of obscure stuff along with the more obvious selections.

I don't know how I had been able to avoid hearing Tennessee Ernie Ford's rendition of Merle Travis' "Sixteen Tons", allegedly the biggest selling country hit of all time, for this long. For their version, Ford and his house arranger Jack Fascinato combined a work song with a late-night jazz setting and managed to keep it pounding and rhythmic. It just smokes! The overall arrangement reminds me a little bit of the ambience on "Swordfishtrombones".

Overall, Tom Waits doesn't seem to have been all that involved with the issue. I mean, he compiled the accompanying CD, interviewed Hank Williams III and recommends some books and films for the readers, but that's about it.

The forthcoming new studio album becomes more and more of an interesting proposition. Waits started working on the album a year ago and now it seems the release date might rather be in 2011, rather than later this year. That would be the longest time he has ever used on working on one album. If you think about it, "Rain Dogs" was done in two and a half months, "Real Gone" took about the same. So did the combined studio time for "Blood Money" and "Alice". All the rest have been completed quicker.

this images contain all the songs on the cd. I don't have it at hand now, but if no-one posts the list, I will soon do so.

The link above - ahum, excuse me - is a link with images of the lists Waits made out of which he extracted the Mojo CD.

Now, with some delay,... though interesting for those who get here a bit later anyway...

The tracklisting of the Mojo CD can be found here:

It's too bad the issue is riddled with typos and other editorial errors. It's especially shameful that the author of the feature article on Tom himself couldn't make it three paragraphs before effing up the name of his most recent album. "Glitter and Gloom" indeed.
